Refresh your Furygan riding kit
With the current lockdown meaning that many of us have got spare time on our hands, it’s a great opportunity to give your Furygan riding kit some care and attention, so that when you’re back out on two-wheels, your kit will be clean, fresh and ready!
Here are some top tips to care for your Furygan garments properly…
Leather – jackets and trousers
It’s important to make the point that not all leather jackets are the same – some leathers cannot be moisturised as the leather itself is oily/porous and will not dry – an example of this would be the New Texas or Stuart jacket. Therefore, check your care label in the garment or with your local dealer before embarking on a cleaning process!
If you are in any doubt, you can test your garment by putting a few drops of water on the leather and see how it behaves. If it runs through the material or leaves a slight mark, then do not use wax or cleansing milk. Anything greasy or waterbased used on this material may damage it. Instead, use a soft brush and a waterproofing spray. It goes without saying to test the above in a hidden area of the jacket.
To avoid premature drying of the leather and to preserve its flexibility, it’s recommended to clean your leather jacket or trousers regularly with a damp sponge and mild detergent. Once it’s air-dried, then wipe with a soft cloth with cleansing milk to nourish and moisturise the leather.
In the case where the leather has dried out, then you will need something more heavy-duty – in the form of Furygan’s leather grease – which can be bought from Furygan dealers along with the Furygan Care Kit.
The grease is very nourishing so a little will go a long way. Apply it in small quantities with a circular motion until it’s penetrated the material. If it leaves white spots, then too much product has been applied. It’s recommended you test your technique on a non-exposed part of the jacket first.
Removable thermal inserts can be washed in the washing machine with a wool washing liquid on a delicate cycle at 30°c maximum and on a medium spin speed – a maximum of 800rpm should be used.
Textile Jackets and Trousers – including riding jeans
In order for textiles to work properly, it’s important that they’re kept free of dirt, dust and general road grime. Many of the internal linings need to be clean in order to work most effectively – for example, if the microscopic holes for water vapour to be expelled are blocked by dirt, then it’s not going to allow the material to remain breathable. Any reflective piping or details will work better when not covered in a layer of dirt.
Firstly remove all the protectors and removable liners from the jacket or trousers and fasten up all the zips and velcro.
Turn the garment inside out and wash them by hand with a mild detergent and tepid water – no warmer than 30°c. If your washer has a hand wash function, then this can be used.
Put your garment in the washing machine on a slow-spin dry cycle – no faster than 600rpm and still inside out – this will prevent any damage to anything external.
Then hang up the jacket or trousers in the shade with a container below to catch any water that drips off. Wait until the garment is completely dry before putting the armour and liners back in.

You can use a waterproofing spray on them to make them even more resistant to water as well as dirt.
We’d recommend cleaning your garments on a regular basis with a damp sponge and a mild detergent to keep them spick and span.
Things to consider of all Furygan textile or leather jackets and trousers:
- Don’t place your garments in the direct sun to dry as this could cause premature discolouration or irreversible damage.
- Don’t dry clean your Furygan textiles – or iron them.
- Be sure to store your riding kit correctly – i.e. not in an airtight container – as this can damage it.
- Always let your garments air dry after use.
